Sydney
The latest on Sydney, April, 2023 – All the stuff below this tell his story up until the last few months. Since the new year, Sydney has come back to stay with us, in his bedroom (alone). His placement was a success, but it was time for both to move on, and Sydney returned to us to recuperate after a planned medical procedure: ear canal ablation. It is an involved surgery that would ultimately free him of infections that were affecting his general health. He is a happy, healthy boy, but as the rest of the story tells, his future is not known. He deserves someone who has time and attention for a lonely boy.
Sydney has feline leukemia. The vets have told us that it’s most likely less time than more. They agreed to neuter him, even though we did discuss euthanasia in the same conversation. Why would we go to the trouble? Because currently, he has quality of life, shows no signs of the disease, and is a happy and wonderfully sweet little boy.
There are variations of this disease; his prognosis is not one of the regressive ones, where he can live a longer, more normal life. His time is limited, and we want him to have the best life he can in the time that he has.
Currently, he resides in his own room in our home – comfortable, but lonely. We spend as much time as we can with him, but we work full-time in addition to caring for a large family of covid-stalled cats also looking for their homes. If we felt that this was the best way for him to enjoy his last days, we would be honoured to continue to care for him. It’s not about the money, or our convenience. It’s for him. He deserves to live his last days with love and care. We don’t know how he came to us, but it’s pretty clear that he’s had a life of suffering.
We are looking for a loving person or family who can spend time with him, give him access to more than one room to live in, and receive all the love and attention he still has to offer. Because his condition is contagious to other cats, he must remain indoors and not have access to other cats. We know that this is a challenging search – a strong-hearted person who loves animals that has no cats currently, prepared to accept the heartache that will come with the joy he brings.
We will remain involved in his care and his journey to the end. We seek someone to either foster indefinitely or adopt him. We envision perhaps a retiree or senior, or someone who works from home, someone who perhaps has recently lost their own babe and has resigned to being petless for the moment. We offer support, insight, advice, and whatever else is needed along the way.
If this situation is not you, you can still help. Please share this post, spread the word. Maybe Sydney will get lucky and find a soft place to land. If you’d like to contribute to his future, contact us directly for donation options.
SYDNEY UPDATE October 6, 2022. We are happy to report that Syd the Kyd has found our forever foster roster! A wonderful friend and supporter of Appin Cats, David, has agreed to share his home with Sydney, with Stephen mentoring his ongoing care. It’s wonderful news for our man Sydney, and just as lucky for David, as two wonderful beings tuck in to enjoy each other’s company. Best lives are best.
